WTCS Round 3: Monza

League

5th February 2023

Round 3 of the WTCS before one of the interim breaks took place at the temple of speed, the infamous Monza circuit in Italy. After the previous round the drivers were given a fair warning about driving standards. Would the warning fall on deaf ears?

An unfortunate penalty saw Chris having to sit the qualifying session out, leaving just Tom and Ryan to crack on. The 2 drivers decided to fill the car up to 20 minutes of driving and keep putting in the laps with tyre wear being very litte around the petrol thirsty circuit. This lead to a great qualifying performance from Tom and Ryan. Both bagging top 30 spots with Tom 6th in class and Ryan in 2nd.

With the race organisers words ringing in many of the drivers ears Race 1 got off to a cautious start throught most of the field. This allowed the high flying Tom and Ryan to help each other to drag themselves up into the reverse grid bracket. A finish of 4th and 5th in class for Ryan and Tom was a good result. Less can be said for Chris starting from the back and being involved in another incident early on to end up 50th.

Race 2 reverse grid was too high up for the lads. So it was as we were at the front for the beginning of the race. Tom getting the better of Ryan at the start and after the being dropped by the main pack and pulling away from the pack behind decided to finish as they were and bag some more solid points for the team, a role reversal of Tom getting 4th in class and Ryan 5th. Chris made a spirited effort with yet more incidents to finish 41st overall.

The reverse grid draw was again not kind to the NOMAD boys. A much better start from Ryan allowed him to stay with the faster pack while Tom got swallowed up by the pack behind and got a helping hand into the kitty litter at the second Lesmo. Nevertheless it was Tom who finished highest amongst the boys with a great drive by Chris to meet up with his fellow comrade, 10th and 11th as they were. Ryan while fighting for a podium was turned on the exit of Prima Variante and with the snake following behind packed close together was relegated all the way back down in 44th.

The upshot of a decent showing is that NOMAD hold 2nd in the Pro Am team standings heading into the first break of the season. After the break will be round 4 at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park.
