With 13 drivers taking part across 5 cars, this years Sebring 12 hours attempt was to be Prestanda NOMADs biggest yet. A mixture of LMP2 and GT3 cars were fielded after weeks of preparation, and here's how they got on.

Sbering 12h_561_3

#561

Drivers: Chris Chadderton and Ryan Hamilton
Car: Mercedes AMG GT3

The #561 entry from the team was filled with currently in form drivers, and had high hopes of success despite relatively minimal pre-race availability from Ryan. They qualified 6th in class in Split 10 of 36 – that number of splits showing just how popular these special events have become in recent years. The 10th split of this race 5 years ago would have been the bottom, and now in the GT3 class that was an incredibly competitive split.

An early spin and a little contact with a prototype got this race off to a less than perfect start, but only dropping to P7. However, the pairing continued to do what in form endurance drivers do best: minimal time loss in traffic, minimal unnecessary risk, and tick the laps off. After 351 of those laps the car finished in a fantastic podium position: 3rd place for this car.

Sebring Dallara LMP2

#562

Drivers: Daniel Gilding and Matthew P Doyle
Car: Dallara P217

This years #562 entry was driven by a pairing who have been less active in recent times but are always capable of great results. Unfortunately their first attempt at this years race didn't go well and they had to DNF early on. However, that happened early enough to have another attempt in the next time slot, in which they qualified 11th in the top split.

From the very beginning Dan and Matt were clear that this was a highly competitive race, with some incredibly quick teams who'd presumably suffered similar fates in the "main" race and had a point to prove. The two drivers worked on a strategy early on though that took a long view of the race, removed a pit stop from their race and helped to catapult them up to a fantastic 3rd place.

#563

Drivers: Jon Williams, Nic Veltenaar, and Tom Stanley
Car: BMW M4 GT3

The first of our 3-driver lineups this year was the BMW fielded by Jon, Nic and Tom. This was another car that had issues early on in the main race and DNF'd. Once again, though, they got that second chance that sim racing allows us compared to real life and they got going again in the 4pm time slot. The car qualified P9 in class in Split 2 of that time slot. Getting through the melee of the start in that race saw the car in P11 and looking to the long game of saving fuel, which worked great during the first stint. However, at the end of the 2nd stint disaster struck again for the car causing around 10 minutes of repairs and multiple laps lost.

A long recovery drive for all three drivers saw them up to P7 right up until the last lap, when Tom suffered a hardware failure dropping the car back to it's starting position of ninth for the end.

LMP2_Taylor_01

#564

Drivers: Oliver E Bunn, Pablo Arteaga, and Taylor Lane
Car: Dallara P217

The third and final of the cars that suffered DNFs in the target race, and again luckily early enough to have another go at the 4pm time slot. As it turned out, this car ended up in the same split as the #563 car and qualified 2nd in their class in what appeared to be a strong opportunity to add a great result for the team.

This car had a clean start to the race until a small bit of damage towards the end of the first stint, but luckily nothing that affected the race materially. While cycling through the drivers, the only major issue was a pitstop that missed putting in the vital fuel and tyres dropping the car to P5. Consistent pace from there to the end of the race, coupled with a couple of issues for cars ahead in the closing stages, meant that this car finished in a brilliant 2nd position.

BMW M4 GT3 Sebring12

#565

Drivers: Ayden Refaie, Dean Timms, and Håkon Eide Lindmo
Car: BMW M4 GT3

The fifth and final car for the team this weekend was a GT3 entry which managed to soldier through the early stages of the target race split after qualifying in 7th in class of split 24.

The car suffered a couple of contacts with faster classes throughout the race, but showed a lot of determination by continuing on for whatever recovery drive they could get. This team were consistently the fastest on track in their class, bagging the fastest lap on the final lap of the race on their way to a strong 4th position.

Closing Thoughts

As a team we would have loved to have all five of our cars complete the first race that they attempted this weekend, but sim racing does give us the opportunity of second chances. To get three podium finishes from five cars is an incredible result overall, and all the drivers involved have positive things to say – whether that's just the positive aspect of taking part, or to grind out a top split podium in the most intense race of their career so far.

2023 continues to build in pace for the team, and we move forwards to a packed set of league races between now and the next major iRacing special event of Nürburgring 24 hours.

Driver Comments

"Overall, it was a good showing of pace throughout the race and we were consistently the fastest car on track on average. It was a shame that a small tap from an LMP2 car that wasn't paying attention caused us to lose seven minutes in the pits, putting us down to 13th place. However, it was a great recovery drive from all of us in the car and we managed to bring it home to 4th place. We couldn't be happier with the result, considering we were taken out." Ayden Refaie Ayden Refaie
"Well, another special event yet another disappointing main split race. Massive netcode on Lap 1 T3 saw us in the wall with a blown engine and one hour and five minutes of required repairs needed. We all agreed to come back and do the 1600-hour split. Race 2 started off well, people were too aggressive so I took myself out of the situation and dropped down to P12 to let everyone ahead fight whilst I just saved fuel casually. 50L left and I decided the field was nicely spread so I opened up the valves and pushed hard for the last 14 laps of stint 1. It went well; we moved up about four spots just picking people off one by one. Unfortunately, with three laps left of the second split we got caught up in an incident which was really just a mess. A Lambo missed the pit entry, decided to brake hard which caused an LMP2 to hit him in the rear, leading to a seven-car pile up. We battled on and managed to climb and catch P9 by two laps over the course of the next six hours. Then we still put in the laps with good times, going long and getting 29 to 30 laps per stint without losing any time and managed to finish in P9. We" &emdash;
"The best race I have ever done was intense from start to finish. Grabbing a podium in a top split race was a huge moment for me personally. Matt's pace was awesome and together we managed to grind out a tough strategy that put us in the podium spot in the closing minutes. It was amazing!" Daniel Gilding Daniel Gilding
"Hands down, the most intense race I've ever been a part of. We decided to play the strategic game and drag out an extra lap in most of our stints, allowing us to avoid the splash and dash finale. Thankfully, that led to us getting a damn good podium! It was an absolute pleasure to come back to this race." &emdash;
""What can I say? What a day of attrition! We went from dying on lap two in our first attempt to finishing second in our class! I cannot fault the efforts of my teammates today; it was an absolute masterclass in teamwork and strategic thinking on the fly to overcome obstacles."" Taylor Lane Taylor Lane
""Fantastic result in the circumstances to come back to P3. Ryan did an awesome drive in a strong GT3 field and we are really pleased to secure a second special event podium since joining the team!"" Chris Chadderton Chris Chadderton
"This race had it all - a complete roller coaster from start to finish. After qualifying 7th, we all felt confident knowing we had strong race pace to move forward. But the race was going to make us work for it! The first three hours went drama-free and we were running in 6th, until we were ran into by an LMP2 missing their brakes, giving us a meatball and 7 minutes 30 seconds in repairs, dropping us to 13th. So, we took the repairs, dusted ourselves off and continued on. A few more hours passed without drama and, now running in 8th and going strong again, we unfortunately made a small error that led to us hitting the barrier and causing another four minutes of repairs. So, again we took the repairs, dusted ourselves off and continued on. We were now running 7th with four hours left and we could see that, with no more issues, the target was still a surprising P5, so we pushed hard with some really strong lap times, lap after lap, plugging away. After 12 hours of great driving from myself, Hakon and Ayden, we came home in 4th, 30+ seconds ahead of P5. Super proud and thankful to" Dean Timms Dean Timms
"This podium is my best result in an iRacing Special Event, and that says it all. I am absolutely happy about it! Fortunately, we were able to climb up to position two even after having some issues, first on the track, then in the pits, and still sealed a great result. First of all, I need to congratulate and thank both my teammates, Oliver and Taylor, for the great job they did and how they pushed the car to this excellent finish. Personally, in my first triple-stint, I took the car in the second position and was able to give it back in the same place. My pace was not great, but I managed to do two fuel-saving stints and only got one incident in two hours of driving. Consistency helped me not to lose too much against our rivals while getting some optional repair time taken out of the car. My second shift of driving was a double-stint in which, again, I was able to avoid any incidents and keep my distance from rivals. However, I was not able to outpace them. This time I took the car in P4 and that's the position in which I handed it back, completing the last fuel-saving stint required for the" Pablo Arteaga Pablo Arteaga
"We can be proud of a hard-fought third place in a competitive GT3 field. With the limited practice I had due to being on holiday and an essentially clean run, third was probably the best we could achieve, and we made it so. Special shout-out to Chris and Charlotte. Chris struggled through a migraine, but in the end we found ourselves on the podium in a special event again. Thank you, Charlotte, for your unwavering support in this sport I love." Ryan Scott Hamilton Ryan Scott Hamilton
"After crashing out on Lap 2 of the main race, I am happy to have finished second in the second race. Overall, our pace was good, as was our consistency. Personally, I have learned a lot from this race which I hope to be able to use to achieve better results in future events." Oliver E Bunn Oliver E Bunn
"After not making it a single lap complete with netcode in the main race, we tried the 4pm race and luck wasn't on our side either. After the damage was repaired, we managed to continue at a good pace to get to seventh, sadly on the last lap my PC failed and dropped back to ninth. Not a good race at all and now I'm going to figure out why my PC won't turn on after the failure." &emdash;
